Box Score Brooklyn, NY---The #1 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs, who knocked off #2 Staten Island back on October 19th to win the CUNYAC regular season title, could not duplicate the win in today's CUNYAC Championship Final, as the Dolphins scored in each half to earn a hard-fought 2-0 victory, CUNYAC tilte and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
For Brooklyn, they end their season with their heads high, having won the conference's regular season crown with a perfect 6-0 record in CUNYAC play. The Bulldogs, however, say goodbye to a great senior class of 10 outstanding players,
Jasmine Fermin,
Sayla Flores,
Jordan Kerwin,
Samantha Rodriguez,
Leslie Gomez,
Olivia Ponce,
Sangam Gurung,Â
Jomhara Palacios, Adeline Monfil, and
Selene Ahuatl.
All of the four-year seniors from that group were on the back-to-back CUNYAC Championship teams of 2013 & 2014, while also claiming the 2016 regular season crown.Â
As for today's action, after some back and forth play to open the game, the College of Staten Island got a great individual play from Kaitlin Russo, who took a pass from Lauren Smith and beat Bulldog keeper
Samantha Rodriguez for the game's first score.
Brooklyn had a hard time gaining momentum after the tally, but did manage to hold CSI within striking distance for the remainder of the half, and had a couple of shots from Kerwin to close the period, but could not convert and entered the break down 1-0.
The second half saw the Bulldogs struggle to produce many scoring chances, while the Dolphins remained aggressive and finally broke through in the game's 71st minute with a goal from Natalia Sandor, giving Staten Island the cushion they needed to ensure a victory and clinch their second consecutive CUNYAC crown.
While two shots got past Rodriguez, she also made some outstanding saves and gave a valiant effort with nine saves, capping a tremendous first season with the team in goal.
Coach Horne and his Bulldogs will look to come back next year and build off a regular season championship and appearance in the Championship Final. Â Although the squad loses some great seniors, one of them being a four-time first team all-conference selection in
Jasmine Fermin, they still manage to return five starters,
Iliana Cabral,
Cansu Usta,
Ashley Calandra,
Ciara Flynn and
Victoria Ramirez, as well as talented underclassmen
Narasha Lynch,
Jennifer Benitez and
Anna Curran.
