Queens College Tennis Center---In a thrilling final that followed the same trend as the semifinal round, the 2017 women's tennis CUNYAC Championship would come down to the final singles match of the evening. Tonight, all eyes were on No. 3 singles between Brooklyn College sophomore
Georgeen Belrose and John Jay's Gabriela da Armas. Belrose would come from behind to take the first set with a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker. da Armas responded in the second, another close set, with a 7-5 victory. Belrose would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the final set, but da Armas wouldn't be denied, rallying for the 6-4 victory, as the No. 4 seeded Bloodhounds won their first conference title in program history over the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs tonight. BC closes the memorable season with a 9-6 record and their first CUNYAC Championship appearance since 2013.
Brooklyn would jump out to a 2-1 lead heading into singles action. BC junior Ieveniia Kostenko and freshman
Rosa Aksanov would take down John Jay's Bernarda Reyes and Rageene Barry in an epic 9-7 battle at the No. 1 flight. Seniors
Rebecca Solano and Fatma Serageldin would also win a close doubles match with an 8-6 victory over John Jay's Angelica Lozano and Clara Wilhelm at the No. 3 flight.
Brooklyn semifinals hero,
Julia Mekler, took care of business at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-2), giving Brooklyn a 3-1 advantage. John Jay would tie the match with straight set wins at the No. 4 flight and No. 2 flight singles almost simultaneously.
Serageldin would force a third set at No. 5 singles, but John Jay's Lozano would take the final set for the 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
Kostenko would finish the season undefeated with a three set win at No. 1 singles over the Bloodhounds' Bernarda Reyes 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0 setting up the No. 3 flight showdown.
The Bulldogs made a five-win improvement from last season's 4-11 mark.
