Women's Volleyball Splits on First Day of Trip

Santa Cruz, CA---The Brooklyn College women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches tonight at UC Santa Cruz.  In their first match of the evening, the Bulldogs defeated Mills College 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-20).  Brooklyn fell to the host in the final match of the night 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-14).  The Bulldogs move to 18-8 with the win and the loss.  BC closes out their trip tomorrow against UC Santa Cruz.  

After falling in the first set against Mills, the Bulldogs won three straight sets for the match.  The Bulldogs were led by senior outside hitter Michaela Appel's 18 kills.  Freshman middle hitter, Megan Ortiz-Mengedoht had a breakout performance finishing with 13 kills. Freshman setter, Ezri Shor, finished with a team-high 22 assists.  

The Bulldogs finished with a .196 hitting percentage to Mills' .144 for the match.  

With the Bulldogs trailing 14-13 in the third set, the Bulldogs used a six-score rally to take the set and lead for good.  

In the second match, the home team was the more efficient of the squads tonight, hitting .337 for the match to Brooklyn's .012.  

The Bulldogs showed some flashes early in the second set, but the Banana Slugs scored nine unanswered points for a comfortable cushion.  

Shor and Appel led Brooklyn with five kills a piece.  Sophomore setter, Claudia Moi, finished with a team-high six assists.
