Women's Volleyball Sweeps Through CUNY Tri-Match at Medgar Evers

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College women's volleyball team improved to 6-1 in conference play today, defeating Medgar Evers, 3-0 (25-7, 25-21, 25-15), and the College of Staten Island, 3-0 (18, 19, 22) in its final CUNYAC tri-match of the season.  BC improves to 12-6 overall with the victories.  Brooklyn will have the rest of the week for practice before traveling to Yeshiva University for a non-conference match on Sunday, October 14, at noon.  

Fifteen Bulldogs played in BC's first match of the day against host, Medgar Ever.  The Bulldogs dominated the first set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead to start the match.  MEC had the second set tied, 21-21, before Brooklyn closed the set out with a four-score rally.  The home team jumped out to 3-0 lead to start the third set before Brooklyn responded with six unanswered scores.  Brooklyn closed out the match by scoring seven of the final eight points.  

Brooklyn freshman outside hitter, Inesa Shimcana, put away a career-high eight kills to lead both teams.  Sophomore setter, Claudia Moi, finished with a match-high 11 assists.  

The Bulldogs and CSI battled most of the way through the first set in Brooklyn's second match of the day.  However, BC went on a five-point run to take a 22-15 lead before sealing the opening set with back-to-back kills.  The Dolphins opened the second set with three straight scores before Brooklyn erased their lead with three scores of its own.  With the second set tied, 11-11, the Bulldogs made their move with a four-point rally capped by a kill put away by freshman setter, Ezri Shor.  BC extended its lead to 24-14 before a late CSI push.  The Dolphins wouldn't go away in the third set with the teams tied, 20-20, down the stretch.  Brooklyn would then score three straight points to take a 23-20 lead.  CSI responded with a pair of scored before Brooklyn ended the match beginning with a kill put away by junior libero, Jailene Paredes, and then an ace served up by freshman middle blocker, Rain Zhang.  

Brooklyn senior outside hitter, Michaela Appel, led the way with a match-high 15 kills.  She also finished with four service aces for the match.  Moi again led the team in assists with 17 for the match.  Sophomore outside hitter, Yana Shaposhnikova, finished with a match-high 12 digs.
