Brooklyn, NY----For the fifth year in a row and eighth trip in the last nine years, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team is heading to the CUNYAC Championship game! The No. 2 Bulldogs rolled to a 70-52 win over the College of Staten Island in the semifinals of the CUNYAC Championships this evening at the West Quad Center. Brooklyn improved to 19-7 with the win while the Dolphins end their season with a 19-8 mark. Brooklyn will take on top-seeded Hunter College this Friday, February 22, in the conference tournament final. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm at Hunter College.
"I thought we came out and played with a ton of energy and emotion, which set the tone tonight," Brooklyn Head Coach,
Alex Lang, exclaimed after the win. "I have a lot of faith in our team and tonight they made everyone proud! We are looking forward to Friday, because our team really loves playing together and we don't want this season to end. We can't wait to get another opportunity to play for a championship!"
The Bulldogs' energy and determination was evident from the opening tip as the BC jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to start the game.
"We wanted to set the tone from the start of the game," Brooklyn sophomore guard
Taylor George explained after the win. "It was our defensive pressure and transition that we knew would get us going to take control of the game." George finished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
CSI was able to weather the early Brooklyn storm to take its only lead of the game, 7-6, with 6:29 to go in the opening quarter. However, the Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Brooklyn closed out the quarter with a 7-0 run capped by a layup finished by sophomore forward,
Chanel Jemmott. Jemmott ended the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season.
Leading 40-28 at halftime, the Bulldogs opened the second half with a 5-0 highlighted by a three-point make by senior win,
Alexandra Moogan. The Dolphins did not lay down, cutting Brooklyn's lead to 48-42 with 7:52 left in the game after a 4-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter. Brooklyn responded with a 6-0 run capped by another Moogan three with 6:27 remaining in the contest to kick the Bulldogs' lead back up to twelve. Moogan knocked down all four of her threes in the second half finishing with 12 points for the game.
CSI looked to shorten the game with 2:30 to go, but the Bulldogs closed out the contest at the charity stripe, grabbing its largest lead of the game (19) with :22 left in the contest.
The Dolphins were paced by Megan McEwan's 14 points. Kayla Schmitter added 13 points.
