No. 2 Bulldogs Stung Late in CUNYAC Championship by No. 1 Hunter, 76-65

HUNTER SPORTSPLEX New York, NY---Looking like the No. 2 Brooklyn College women's basketball team would repeat as City University of New York Athletic Conference(CUNYAC) Champions, top-seed and host, Hunter College, spoiled the Bulldogs' plans in the final five minutes of play for the conference title, 76-65.  Brooklyn moves to 19-8 with the championship loss while Hunter punches its ticket to the NCAA Tournament.  It was Brooklyn's fifth CUNYAC championship game appearance in a row. 

Trailing the Bulldogs 57-49, with 6:45 to go in the contest, the home team went on a 13-0 run to take a 62-57 lead with 5:00 remaining.  Junior wing, Alexandra Moogan cut the Hunter lead to 64-62 before Hunter responded with nine unanswered points to seal the championship win in the final two minutes of play.  Moogan shot 4-8 from beyond the arc for the game finishing with 16 points.    

The Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 33-14 in the fourth quarter.
 
Hunter opened the second quarter with a three-point make buried by Janine Conway before the Bulldogs responded with a 17-4 run capped by a three-point bomb buried by Moogan, forcing a Hunter timeout with 4:50 left in the first half.  A Moogan layup gave Brooklyn its first double-digit lead of the contest, 31-21, with 4:09 left in the second quarter.  Hunter chipped away at the Brooklyn lead, closing out the first half with a 6-0 run ending with a buzzer-beating Theresa Leung three-point make to cut BC's halftime lead to 36-34.  BC junior forward, Jasmine Hansgen, led the way with nine first half points.  She finished the game with 11 points and 12 rebounds. 
 
Hunter continued its momentum from the second quarter into the third, retaking the lead, 39-38, at the 8:10 mark.  However, the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run sparked by a Taylor George three with 7:49 left in the third quarter.  Brooklyn extended its lead back up to ten, 51-41, with 3:08 to go in the quarter following two makes at the charity stripe for Chanel Jemmott.  Brooklyn would into the final quarter with a 51-43 advantage.  Jemmott recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 21 rebounds. 
 
After a two-minute stalemate to start the contest, Hunter got on the board first with a free throw converted by Jade Aponte.  The Bulldogs answered with a corner jumper buried by senior forward Jasmine Hansgen.  However, the Hawks then went on a 5-0 run sparked by an Aponte three for an early 6-2 advantage with 5:39 remaining in the opening quarter.  A three-point play completed by Taylor George tied the game, 11-11, with just under a minute to play before Hunter closed out the quarter with a 3-0 spurt for a 14-11 advantage. 
 
Three Hawk starters combined for 53 points led by Championship MVP Janine Conway's game-high 24 points.  Aponte added 19 points and Christine Patterson added 10 points to go along with 15 rebounds.
