Brooklyn, NY----Brooklyn College is saddened to announce the recent passing of longtime academic, BC Athletics Hall of Famer, and former Director of Athletics, Charles Tobey. He was 85. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; daughters; grandchildren; and great-grandson.
Mr. Tobey was a member of the Brooklyn College community for four decades. He joined the faculty in 1968, teaching for more than 40 years before retiring in 2008. Over the course of his distinguished career, he served as Director of Athletics from 1968 to 1977, chair of the Physical Education Department until 2009, and longtime chair of the Faculty Council (1997–2009). His leadership and deep commitment to shared governance, student success, and the mission of public education left an enduring mark on the college.
An inspiration and role model to generations of students and colleagues, Mr. Tobey was inducted into the Brooklyn College Athletic Hall of Fame and dedicated his life to educating and coaching students with integrity, discipline, and care. An accomplished runner who completed 12 marathons, he lived the values he taught—perseverance, dedication, and resilience.
After being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 37 years ago, Mr. Tobey continued to meet life with unwavering positivity and purpose. He was featured in a groundbreaking documentary highlighting the positive effects of dance for people living with Parkinson's disease and was a cherished member of the Dance for PD community at the Mark Morris Dance Center. His strength, grace, and generosity of spirit in the studio are remembered as an essential part of his legacy.
Mr. Tobey was last on campus for the rededication of the Brooklyn College Athletic Hall of Fame, a fitting reminder of the many ways he remained connected to the institution he helped shape.
