Valentina Monroy Named BC Female Student-Athlete of the Month
After an impressive freshman season that saw Valentina Monroy garner City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Rookie of the Year honors, Monroy has continued to flourish in her sophomore season.
During Brooklyn’s three meets in the month of December, Monroy was stellar recording six-first place finishes during the month.
Coming in BC’s 82-62 victory over CUNYAC rival York College on December 2nd to kick off the month, Monroy helped lead the Bulldogs to the win claiming first place finishes in the 200-Yard Medley Relay (2:30.69) as part of the quartet with Jenny Lee, Tonia Jerrick and Megan Pendergast, the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:20.15) and the 100-Yard Freestyle (1:02.91).
Despite suffering a 112-90 loss against conference foe the College of Staten Island, Monroy once again put on a spectacular individual performance posting three first place finishes in her second straight meet.
Monroy took first place in the 200-Yard Medley Relay (2:22.85) along with teammates Stephanie Caravello, Catherine Chan and Amanda Martino, the 100-Yard Butterfly (1:14.64) and the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:17.41).
Finishing off the month against SUNY Maritime on December 9th, Monroy recorded three second place finishes as Brooklyn would eventually fall 122-71.
Monroy, along with Lee, Chan and Caravello, came in second place in the 200-Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:16.26. Later in the 200-Yard IM, Monroy came up short of first place with a time of 2:42.94. In her final event of the meet, the 100-Yard Freestyle, Monroy came in second with a time of 1:02.80.
For her efforts during the month of December 2011, Valentina Monroy has been named the Brooklyn College Female Student-Athlete of the Month.
