Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Team (5-1, 2-0 CUNYAC) cruised to their third straight victory on Tuesday evening, defeating the College of Staten Island (0-6, 0-2 CUNYAC) by the score of 84-67.
Thomas Guerin (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) opened the game with a three-point play and the Bridges never trailed. Brooklyn pushed the lead to 13 points, 22-9 midway through the opening stanza as
Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY) converted a lay-up off a pass from
Tyshawn Russell (Holy Cross / Jamaica, NY). It was the first of five assists on the night for the freshman point guard. As the first half wound down, sophomore
Marlon Thornton (Richmond Hill / Brooklyn, NY) tipped in a missed try building the Bridges lead to 17 points, 38-21. A Ryan Hennessey (St. Joseph by the Sea / Staten Island, NY) three-pointer started a 5-0 Dolphins run to close the half, sending BC into the break with a 12 point edge.
The second period began with CSI dropping seven of the first eight points, highlighted by a triple from Ibrahim Eleham (Fort Hamilton / Brooklyn, NY). Less than two minutes into the frame, the Dolphins trailed by a scant six points, 39-33.
Ahmad Hemingway (Cutis / Brooklyn, NY) and Jean-Baptiste combined to score six consecutive points, pushing the Brooklyn lead back up to 12 points. The cushion for the Bridges never again dipped below nine points and remained in double-digits for the last 13 minutes of the game.
Brooklyn was paced by Jean-Baptiste, who netted 23 points on an 8-of-16 shooting performance. Jean-Baptiste and
Daniel Nisbett (Michael J. Petrides / Staten Island, NY) each collected a team-best six caroms. Four other Bridges reached double-figures in scoring, including Nisbett who dropped 17 and added five assists. Hemingway scored 14 and was credited with four steals. Thornton added a season-high of 13 points in just 13 minutes off the bench, while Guerin converted on free throws down the stretch to run his tally to 11 points.
The Dolphins were led by Hennessey's 20 point, eight rebound performance. Jordan Young (Wall / Asbury Park, NJ) chipped in with 13 points and eight boards.
Brooklyn College will travel to SUNY Purchase for a non-conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
