Bridges Power Past John Jay in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketbal Team (21-5, 11-2 CUNYAC) earned a quarterfinal victory over John Jay College (7-19, 4-9 CUNYAC) in the 2009 CUNYAC / Con Edison Tournament,  The second-seeded Bridges topped the seventh-seeded Bloodhounds by a final score of 77-67 on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams traded baskets in the early going, setting the stage for an exciting afternoon of basketball.  Back-to-back baskets by Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY) highlighted a 9-0 run for the Bridges midway through the first half.  An old-fashioned three-point play from Ahmad Hemingway (Curtis / Brooklyn, NY) gave BC a 24-12 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the opening stanza.  Brooklyn maintained a double-digit lead for most of the half, but a late John Jay run cut the gap to six points at the half.

The second half started with an 11-6 Bloodhounds rally. A Miguel Garcia (St. Raymond's / Bronx, NY) jumper made it a two-point contest, 43-41 less than five minutes into period. A Hemingway steal turned into a basket and catapulted the Bridges on a 16-4 spurt over the next four minutes.  With the lead at 14 points, BC seemed poised to pull away, but the fiesty Bloodhounds would not be denied.  Consecutive fast-break baskets by Chris Jaeger (Hicksville / Hicksville, NY) and Godfrey Mascal (Paul Robeson / Brooklyn, NY) made it an eight-point affair.

John Jay pulled to within six points in the final 77 seconds, but could get no closer.  Thomas Guerin (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) and Amil John (South Shore / Brooklyn, NY) combined to go six for six from the charity stripe in the final minute to seal the victory.

Brooklyn was lead by an outstanding performance by Jean-Baptiste, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. He also added five assists and seven steals.  John scored 15 points, while Guerin chipped in with 12 points.  Jaeger netted a game-high 24 points in defeat for the Bloodhounds.
