Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Swimming & Diving team grounded the Cardinals of York College earlier tonight in a CUNY Athletic Conference meet by a score of 106-70, to pick up its first win of the 2010-2011 season. The Bulldogs improve to 1-2 on the season, 1-2 in the CUNYAC; while the Cardinals fall to 0-3 on the year, 0-2 in the CUNYAC.

Tonight's win marks the first victory for the BC Women's Swimming and Diving program since the team was suspended following the 2004 season and reinstated this season.

The quartet of Megan Pendergast (Warwick, NY/Warwick), Lucie O'Donnell (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), Valentina Monroy (Brooklyn, NY/Edward R. Murrow) and Marisa Paolillo (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) got the Bulldogs on the board early taking first place in the 200 Medley Relay.

Another quartet made up of Catherine Chan (Flushing, NY/Townsend Harris), Anastasia Korpusov (Los Angeles, CA/El Camino Real), Sun Mei Liu (New Hyde Park, NY/Townsend Harris) and Jacqueline Szpunt (Brooklyn, NY/Edward R. Murrow) also brought home a first place finish in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.

O'Donnell and Monroy each had solid individual performances for Brooklyn as O'Donnell posted first place finishes in the 200-Yard IM and the 400-Yard Freestyle. “She is such a talent,” said Head Coach Jillian Wyrick. “She's so coachable and competitive, just the kind of swimmer whose potential is limitless. I can't wait to see her develop this season.” Monroy took home first place finishes in the 200-Yard Freestyle and the 100-Yard Butterfly. “She gets better every time she swims and isn't afraid to attack a race,” said Wyrick.

Pendergast and Paolillo also had first place finishes for the Bulldogs in the 800-Yard Freestyle and the 50-Yard Freestyle, respectively. “She swam a really strong and consistent race,” said Wyrick of Pendergast. “I think we are going to see great things from her in the distance events this season.” Speaking on Paolillo, Coach Wyrick says: “She is an intensely focused sprinter and has the ablitiy to kick it into another gear like few swimmers I've coached.”

“I'm so impressed with the unity and enthusiasm of the women's team,” said Wyrick. “They mean business right now and I think today's win really solidified for them that they are a talented group.”

Brooklyn returns to action on Saturday, November 20th, when the Bulldogs will travel to Bronxville, NY to take on Sarah Lawrence College and Mount Saint Vincent College. The Tri-Meet is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
