Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team made the three mile trip up Bedford Avenue on Tuesday Night to open up CUNY Athletic Conference play on the road against borough rival Medgar Evers College. In the end, the host Cougars would defend their home court, downing the Bulldogs by a score of 74-65. With the loss, Brooklyn falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the CUNYAC; while Medgar Evers improves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the CUNYAC.
Tied at two points apiece in the opening minute of the game, Medgar Evers used a 13-0 run to seize a 15-2 advantage with 15:23 remaining in the half. The Cougars would maintain a double digit lead for much of the half, until a Brooklyn 9-0 run cut the Bulldogs deficit to four, 33-29, with 2:59 left before the break. Senior
Daniel Velasquez (Brooklyn, NY/Telecommunications) keyed the run scoring seven of the nine points. Brooklyn would be unable to get any closer, as Medgar Evers headed into halftime with a 38-31 lead.
The Cougars continued to control the game in the second half, pushing their lead to as many as 18 on two occasions. Trailing by 15, 67-52, with 5:11 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs showed their resiliency utilizing an 11-2 run to make it a six point game, 69-63, with 1:15 left. However, that would be as close as Brooklyn would get, as Medgar Evers hit a few key free throws down the stretch to take home the 74-65 victory.
For the game, the Cougars shot an even 50% (28-for-56) from the field, including going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc, as Medgar Evers never trailed in the game. The Bulldogs were held to just 33.3% (20-for-60) shooting from the field, including going 3-for-11 from three.
Junior
Tyshawn Russell (Jamaica, NY/Holy Cross) scored a team-high 15 points on the night for Brooklyn, while senior
Darnell Cudjoe (Brooklyn, NY/Murray Bergtraum) and junior
Amil John (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore) chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Cudjoe also finished the night with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Sophomore
Steven Grant (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) recorded a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with seven points, while Velasquez netted 10 points coming off the bench.
For Medgar Evers, Jovan Deare led all scorers with a game-high 27 points, while Marlon McGlashin and Robert Johnson were also in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Winston Douglas had a team-high 10 rebounds, to go with eight points.
Brooklyn will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday, December 2nd, as the Bulldogs will take on another conference borough rival in the Yellow Jackets of City Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the West Quad Center. BCTV will be taping the game, which will be shown citywide on CUNY TV at later date.
