Men’s Basketball Finishes Regular Season with 87-80 Victory Over Yeshiva

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team concluded the 2010-2011 regular season with an 87-80 win over Yeshiva University tonight. With the win, the Bulldogs finish the regular season with a 14-11 overall record, while the Maccabees fall to 5-18 overall on the season.

BC had five players score in double figures led by junior Tyshawn Russell, who dropped 19 points. Senior Ahmad Hemingway added 17 points, while junior Amil John and senior Darnell Cudjoe chipped in with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Sophomore Christopher Guttadaro contributed with 14 points coming off the bench.

Yeshiva also had a balanced scoring night as four Maccabees were in double digit scoring, led by Dovie Hoffman and Chen Biron, scoring 19 points apiece. Hoffman also added a game-high nine rebounds. Gil Bash notched 16 points and eight rebounds, while Simon Brookim added 13 points off the bench. Omer Haim dished out a game-best 11 assists.

The Maccabees won the battle of the glass, out-rebounding the Bulldogs by a 38-31 margin; however, Brooklyn's stingy defense forced Yeshiva into 23 turnovers, with 14 coming via steal. The Bulldogs made the most of the Maccabees miscues scoring 36 points off of turnovers for the game.

Both teams were fairly even shooting from the field for the game, as Brooklyn shot 50.8% (30-for-59) from the floor, compared the Yeshiva shooting 49.1% (28-for-57). The Maccabees were also a perfect 19-for-19 from the charity stripe, while the Bulldogs converted on 24-of-37 (64.9%) attempts from the free throw line.

Brooklyn came out of the gates on fire, jumping out to a 16-2 lead with 15:57 remaining in the first half. Yeshiva would answer right back with a 13-0 run to cut their deficit to one, 16-15, at the 12:34 mark of the opening half. A pair of free throws from Hoffman would later give the host Maccabees its first lead of the game, 21-20, as Yeshiva would lead by as many as five, 25-20, before the Bulldogs regained control of the game with an 11-0 run to take a 31-25 advantage with 5:46 left before halftime. The teams would trade baskets down the stretch as Brooklyn headed into the break with a 39-37 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs would remain in control of the game through the early stages of the second half, leading by as many as 10, 57-47, with 12:39 left in the ballgame. However, the Maccabees would not go down quietly, as Yeshiva used a 12-0 run to retake the lead, 59-57, with 9:16 remaining in the contest. The teams would again trade baskets until Brooklyn finally took control of the game for good. Tied for the sixth time in the game at 74 all with just 2:36 remaining before the final buzzer, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to take an 82-74 advantage with :41 seconds left in the game. Brooklyn would hit its free throws down the stretch to edge out a hard fought 87-80 victory.

Brooklyn will now turn its attention towards the 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNAYC)/Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships, as the #4 seed Bulldogs will host the #5 seed Cardinals of York College in the Quarterfinals Round on Sunday, February 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the West Quad Center.
