Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team dropped a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match to the Hawks of Hunter College earlier today at the BC Tennis Courts by a score of 8-1. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 0-4 overall, 0-3 in conference play; while the reigning CUNYAC champion Hawks improve to 2-0 overall, 2-0 in league play.
The day began with doubles play, as the Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 advantage, taking all three doubles flights. Hunter took #1 and #2 doubles with relative ease, 8-4 and 8-1, respectively, however, #3 doubles would require an extra frame, as the duo of Wilfredo Garcia and Robert Frischling edged out the tandem of seniors
Arvind Badhey and
Qing Hui Tan, 9-8 (8-6).
The thrilling play from #3 doubles would continue into singles play, as four of the six singles matches would head into a third set.
The highlight match of the day for Brooklyn came from sophomore
Matthew Micharlsen, who picked up the lone victory on the day for BC, besting his counterpart Thomas Lin at #2 singles. Micharlsen took the first set, 6-3, however, Lin would come back to take the second set, 6-4, forcing a third set. Micharlsen would not be denied his first win on the young season, taking the third and decisive set, 6-4.
The #1, #4 and #5 singles flights all featured third set tie-breakers, with Hunter edging out victories in all three.
At #1, Hunter's Arthur Kapetanakis took the first set over BC's
Anthony Chan 6-2, however, Chan would not go down without a fight as the sophomore battled back in the second set to win a hard fought decision 7-6 (9-7) to force a third set tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, Kapetanakis would take home the win 10-4.
At #5 singles, Brooklyn's Badhey took the opening set 6-4, however, he would be denied the win in the second set as Garcia came back to win the second set 6-1 and the eventual tie-breaker, 10-4.
The marathon match of the day came from BC senior
Raymond Chan and Frischling at the #4 singles spot. After dropping a grueling first set, 7-6 (7-5), Chan showed his determination taking the second set, 6-1. In the end, however, it would be Frischling who would come out on top, taking the tie-breaker under the lights, 10-4.
Brooklyn will be back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 23rd, as the Bulldogs will travel to Newark, NJ to take on the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers – Newark in a non-conference match, scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
