Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball Team won their third straight match on Thursday, as they wowed their home fans with a three set, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 win over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn. The win brought the Bulldogs' season record to 3-1, while the Bears fell to 1-2 on the year.
The first set saw Brooklyn jump out to an early 8-4 lead behind the support of the huge opening night crowd. St. Joe's would not go quietly as they fought back quickly to take a 12-10 lead behind consecutive kills from Kim Matthews.
Two
Caitlin McMullen kills evened the score and brought the BC crowd back to life. After St. Joe's took the lead back at 13-12, Brooklyn went on a 6-2 run to pull ahead 19-15.
SJC rallied to close the score to 21-20, but Brooklyn answered once more with a 4-1 run to close the set, as sophomore
Jillian Escobar ended the run with two straight kills.
The second set mirrored the first as BC jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but after a St. Joe's timeout, the Bears came back to close the gap to 9-7. BC would go on a 11-6 rally, sparked by two McMullen kills and three Escobar aces.
St. Joe's would not make much headway for the remainder of the set as Brooklyn took the stanza 25-19.
In the third set St. Joseph's put forth a great effort in trying to extend the match, taking a 22-20 lead. The Bulldogs would not be denied on their home floor, as they battled back to tie the score at 23, and then closed out the match on a Kathu Chu ace and Escobar kill.
"Communication was the key to tonight's success," said Head Coach
Joanne Riggs of her team's third win on the young season.
"The crowd was awe inspiring," Riggs commented on the 367 fans who attended the home opener. "They really cheered us to a victory."
The Bulldogs and their fans won't get much time to enjoy their win as they will be right back on the court tomorrow at the NYU-Poly Tournament to play matches against the hosts at 4 pm and Montclair State at 6 pm.
All fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they head to NYU Poly's campus on Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
