#2 Men’s Basketball Upset By #7 York in Overtime

Brooklyn, NY --- The #2 seeded Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking, 79-73, overtime loss to the #7 seeded York College Cardinals in the Quarterfinals round matchup of the 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships at the West Quad Center this afternoon.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 9-17 overall on the year and will advance to the Semifinals round, which will be played at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of the City College of New York (CCNY) this Tuesday, February 21st. York will take on the reigning CUNYAC Champion Medgar Evers College, the #6 seed, who also pulled off an upset in their quarterfinal game against the #3 seed Lehman College Lightning, 63-60.

With the loss, the Bulldogs finish the season with a 17-9 overall record and will await a possible at-large bid to the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Men's Basketball Metro Tournament. Bids should be announced on Monday, February 27th, with the opening round games to be played on campus sites on Wednesday, February 29th.

Brooklyn took the early lead within the first five minutes of the game, leading 10-4 at the 15:49 mark of the opening period. Senior Amil John and junior Kavon Baker led the charge scoring five points apiece. The Cardinals would quickly turn the tables, taking a six point advantage of their own, 21-15, utilizing a 17-5 run over the next six minutes.

BC would begin to chip away at the deficit and regain the lead. The Bulldogs used a 19-6 run to take their largest lead of the game, 34-27, with 2:37 left before the halftime break. Senior Tyshawn Russell helped spark the run, netting 10 of the 19 points. Brooklyn would eventually take a six point halftime lead, 37-31.

The second half featured a tight affair with seven ties and two lead changes. York began the period with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 39 all with 14:25 left in the game. BC would answer quickly with a three-pointer from senior Wade Kornegay and later a layup from Russell and a dunk from classmate Keiran Halton to cap off a 7-0 run to go back up 46-39 at the 13:20 mark of the half.

The game would feature runs from both teams from there on out, as the game would head into overtime tied at 64-64, with neither team wanting to go down lightly.

The overtime period would belong to the Cardinals, as York outscored Brooklyn 15-9 in the extra frame. The Cardinals received a pair of huge three-pointers from Mark Evans, as well as clutch free throws from William Holley down the stretch to pull off the upset and advance to the semifinals round.

Brooklyn was led by John's team-high 22 points, while Baker and Russell finished the day with 17 points apiece. Baker also grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds to record a double-double, while also dishing out seven assists, nearly pulling off a near triple-double. Halton added 10 points.

For York, Tony Vails led all scorers with 25 points, while Holley ended the day with a double-double with 24 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. Evans chipped in with 14 points, while Omari Phipps helped on the glass with 12 rebounds, as the Cardinals out-rebounded the Bulldogs 55-34 for the game.

BC forced York into 20 turnovers, while committing just six turnovers of their own.
