New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Swimming & Diving team completed its 2012-2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular season by defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Tuesday evening at the John Jay Pool, by a score of 56-39.
With the win, BC finishes the regular season with an even 3-3 record in the conference. It's the team's first winning season in the CUNYAC since the program was reinstated for the 2010-2011 season. Brooklyn also improves to 6-5 overall on the season.
John Jay falls to 2-5 overall on the year and 2-4 in the CUNYAC.
Leading the way for Brooklyn was junior
Valentina Monroy, who posted two individual first place finishes on the night. Monroy took first in the longest event of the evening, the 1,000-Yard Freestyle, with a time of 13:13.42; as well as the 200-Yard IM with a time of 2:40.37.
Monroy was also a member of the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team that captured first place with a time of 2:01.53. Monroy swam the second leg, as was joined by classmate
Stephanie Caravello and sophomores
Laura Rodriguez and
Jenny Lee.
The Bulldogs also took top honors in the 200-Yard Medley Relay, as the team of Caravello, junior
Megan Pendergast, Lee and junior
Patricia Velloza, took first place with a time of 2:24.16.
Pendergast, Velloza, Lee and Caravello also took home a first place finish in their individual events.
Pendergast took first in the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:25.20), Velloza took first in the fastest event of the night, the 50-Yard Freestyle (30.35), Lee placed first in the 100-Yard Butterfly (1:22.79), while Caravello took first in the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:18.32).
In all, the Bulldogs took home eight first place finishes out the 11 events that were swum on the night.
Brooklyn returns to the pool this Saturday, January 26th, as the Bulldogs will have one final meet before the CUNYAC Championships, which will be held over three days (January 31st – February 2nd) at Lehman College. BC will welcome Sarah Lawrence College to the West Quad Center on Saturday with the meet beginning at 1:00 pm. The Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving teams will also be honoring their six seniors, whom will be competing at home for the final times in their careers.
