Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- In a battle for borough bragging rights, the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team defeated the Cougars of Medgar Evers College, 75-67, in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup on Wednesday night at the West Quad Center.
With the win, Brooklyn moves to 7-12 overall and 5-6 in the CUNYAC; while Medgar Evers drops to 9-12 overall and 5-7 in conference play. The victory also gives the Bulldogs the tiebreaker over the Cougars, as BC has swept the season series. Brooklyn defeated Medgar Evers, 75-71, back on December 11th.
Other than a 13-13 tie at the 12:43 mark of the first half, the Cougars never trailed in the half, as Medgar Evers dominated the opening period. The visitors led by as many as 16, 39-23; before taking a 39-25 halftime advantage.
The Cougars would maintain its double-digit lead through the first four minutes of the second half, as the tide began to change. Following a layup from Hector Navarro that put the Cougars up 12, 45-33, with 16:22 left in the game, the Bulldogs began to make their move and used a 7-0 run to cut their deficit down to five, 45-40, at the 12:30 mark if the second half.
With the deficit down to single digits, Brooklyn kept building on its momentum and would eventually take its first lead of the game, 65-64, on a layup from senior
Kavon Baker with just 1:53 remaining on the clock.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a severe offensive scoring drought from the Cougars to take their first and only lead for good. After a free throw from Pablo Segura that put Medgar Evers ahead 64-62, with 3:39 left in the game; the Cougars would not score again until Jovan Deare's layup with 19 seconds on the clock. In that time, Brooklyn went on an 11-0 run to fuel its come-from-behind victory, as the Bulldogs would go on to take the 75-67 win.
Baker led all scorers with 28 points to go with five assists, while
Jeffrey Noel chipped in with 24 points and eight rebounds. Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week
Egzon Gjonbalaj continued his strong play with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior
Abdul Lanlokun added seven rebounds.
For Medgar Evers, Winston Douglas had another double-double, with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Douglas leads the nation in double-doubles. Valin Williams also registered a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Deare and Michael Taylor finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Navarro dished out five assists to go with seven points.
The Bulldogs' pressure defense aided the BC comeback, as Brooklyn scored 32 points off of 24 Medgar Evers turnovers.
For the game, Brooklyn shot 41.0% (25-61) from the field, including going 7-for-23 (30.4%) from beyond the arc. BC also shot 81.8% (18-22) from the free throw line.
Medgar Evers shot 36.2% (25-69) from the field and only converted 2-of-15 (13.3%) from three. The Cougars shot 75.0% (15-20) from the stripe.
Brooklyn returns to the hardwood this Friday, February 1st, as the Bulldogs will travel to the Bronx, NY to take on the Lightning of Lehman College in CUNYAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The game will be another must win for Brooklyn, as the Bulldogs inch closer to a possible fourth seed and the right to host a quarterfinal round game of the upcoming CUNYAC Championships, which begin on February 17th at the highest seed.
