Women’s Volleyball Sweeps CCNY in CUNYAC Quarterfinals; Advance to Semifinals

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- In the quarterfinals round of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Pepsi Women's Volleyball Championships, the #4 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs defeated the #5 seeded Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-20), on Tuesday evening at the West Quad Center.

With the win, BC improves to 13-15 overall on the season and advances to the semifinals round for the second time in three seasons. CCNY ends its season with a 10-22 overall record.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs were a trio of freshmen, as Julia Bogdan and Francesca LoCascio each finished with nine kills. Bogdan also added 12 digs and three service aces to her stat line. LoCoascio posted an impressive .600 hitting percentage on the night. Classmate Crystal Wu paced the offense with a match-best 24 assists.

Senior Jillian Escobar contributed with 10 digs and six kills, while sophomore Yelizaveta Malysheva added five hills and nine digs. Senior Lisenia Rodriguez was solid defensively with a team leading 13 digs, while classmate Manon Bailly was strong up front at the net with four block asssits.

For CCNY, Leticia Marotti posted a match-high 12 kills, to go along with 13 digs for the double-double. She also added three aces. Victorica Del Toro dished out 14 assists, while Veralucia Quispe registered a match-best 17 digs.

The Bulldogs controlled the first set with a strong hitting percentage, as Brooklyn hit .346 (11 kills – 2 errors – 26 total attacks) to propel them to the 25-15 win. BC never trailed in the set as the Beavers would only be able to tie the game on two occasions. An early 5-0 run to break a 2-2 tie and later a 7-0 run to close out the set would be too much for CCNY to overcome.

Building off of its momentum from the opening set win, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back en route to its 25-19 win.

Up 2-0, Brooklyn looked to close out the match in straight sets as the Bulldogs ran out to a 10-3 advantage. The deficit would be too much for the Beavers to come back from, as BC took home a 25-20 win to punch its ticket to the semifinals round.

"The team came to play tonight and they were taking no prisoners," said head coach Joanne Riggs. "I could not be prouder of this group of women. They have worked tirelessly to get to this point and they are peaking at a great time. Their cohesiveness was evident to everyone who watched the match."

Up next for Brooklyn will be the top seeded Bearcats of Baruch College, as the Bearcats defeated #8 Medgar Evers College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-5, 25-4, 25-9), in their quarterfinals match. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start at Hunter College this Friday, November 8th. The final is also scheduled for Friday with an 8:00 pm start time.
