Men’s Basketball Edges John Jay, 91-90, in Overtime Thriller; Erase 17-Point Halftime Deficit

Box Score New York, NY --- Senior Jeffrey Noel hit the go ahead free throw with just three seconds left in overtime to lift the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team past the Bloodhounds of John Jay College, 91-90, on Wednesday night at the Doghouse on the campus of John Jay in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.

With the win, Brooklyn extends it winning streak to a season best five straight to improve to 10-12 overall on the year and 8-6 in the CUNYAC. John Jay drops to 13-11 overall on the season and 9-6 in conference play.

The BC win also evens the season series between the two schools, as John Jay won the first meeting back on January 12th. Both teams are now tied for third in the conference standings with six losses each.

The contest was a game of two halves, as John Jay controlled the first half, while Brooklyn owned the second period. Regulation would not be enough to determine a winner, as the game would head into overtime, where the Bulldogs would come out triumphant.

The Bloodhounds never trailed in the opening half as the closest Brooklyn got to taking the lead was a layup from Noel that tied the game at 2-2 at the 19:13 mark of the first half. John Jay would use an 8-0 run, as Isaiah Holman scored all eight points to put the home team up 10-2 with 17:39 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Bloodhounds would lead by double figures for much of the first half and would eventually lead by as many as 21, 44-23, with 1:29 left before the halftime break. John Jay would head into the locker room with a 47-30 advantage.

The second half was a complete turnaround as the Bulldogs got back into the game. Trailing by 18, 64-46, with just 12:24 remaining on the clock, Brooklyn began to chip away at its deficit. Using a 26-6 run, BC took its first lead of the game, 72-70, with just 2:55 left in the game. Freshman Egzon Gjonbalaj scored 10 points in the run, while senior Steven Grant added seven points.

The Bulldogs would go up by as many as four, 76-72, with 1:26 remaining; however, John Jay would outscore Brooklyn 5-1 down the stretch and tie the game at 77 all to force overtime.

Using its momentum from the second half, BC opened the overtime period scoring the first five points to go ahead 82-77 with 3:47 left. John Jay would never regain the lead again, as the Bloodhounds would only be able to tie the game twice during the extra time. Brooklyn would answer ever John Jay run down the stretch, as Noel's free throw would eventually give the Bulldogs its 91-90 win.

Gjonbalaj paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 23 points on 9-for-18, to go with seven steals, five rebounds and three assists. Senior Kavon Baker finished with 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds, while Noel added 16 points and seven rebounds. Grant added 13 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench and Shayne Martinez chipped in with eight points.

Holman led all scorers with 30 points for John Jay shooting 10-for-19 from the field and 5-for-9 from three. Jamar Harry posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Darryl Dennis finished with 14 points.  Korede Griffith added 10 points.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 45.1% (32-71) from the field, but struggled from downtown shooting 26.7% (4-15) from three.

John Jay shot 47.8% (32-67) from the field and an impressive 52.6% (10-19) from beyond the arc.

Free throws would play a key role in the outcome, as BC went to the line 35 times, converting 23 (65.7%), while John Jay went to the line 21 times, converting 16 (76.2%).

The Bulldogs also won the battle of the glass, outrebounding the Bloodhounds 42-40, which led to 18 second chance points for Brooklyn. Brooklyn also outscored John Jay 46-36 in the paint.

BC's tenacious defense forced John Jay into 34 turnovers, which led to 38 points for the Bulldogs.

Brooklyn will be back in action this Saturday, February 9th, as the Bulldogs will play host to the Hawks of Hunter College in another key CUNYAC match up. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm at the West Quad Center. Grant, Baker, Noel and Abdul Lanlokun will all be honored prior to the start of the game as part of Senior Day celebrations.
