Harry Hazan’s Late Free Throws Lift Men’s Basketball Past Baruch, 59-58; Bulldogs Extend Win Streak to Four Straight

Box Score New York, NY --- Trailing by one with 0.4 left on the clock, freshman Harry Hazan drilled a pair of free throws to propel the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team over the Bearcats of Baruch College, 59-58, at the ARC Arena on Monday night in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tilt.

With the win, Brooklyn extends its win streak to four in a row to improve to 9-12 overall on the season and 5-7 in CUNYAC play. Baruch drops to an even 11-11 overall on the year and 7-6 in the conference.

The Bearcats took a late 58-57 lead on a tip-in from Joshua Vital with just seven seconds left in the game. The Bulldogs had one last chance to regain the lead and take home the win, as Baruch would be called for a foul with no time left on the clock, setting the stage for Hazan's eventual game-winning free throws.

The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures led by sophomore Egzon Gjonbalaj's team leading 13 points. Juniors Steven Diaz, Jai Kellman and Valon Djombalic all chipped in with 10 points apiece. Djombalic and classmate Justin Staton pulled down nine rebounds each.

For Baruch, Granville Gittens registered a double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Raymond De La Cruz added 13 points.

Baruch led the entire first half, as Brooklyn was only able to tie the score three times, unable to take the lead. The Bearcats led by as many as eight, 28-20, as the home team kept the visitors at bay throughout the period, eventually taking a five-point, 28-23, halftime advantage.

The second half featured much of the same as Baruch continued to keep Brooklyn at arm's length, once again leading by as many as eight, 37-29, with 12:54 left in the game.

The Bulldogs would eventually tie the game for the fourth time at 42 all on a three-pointer from Diaz. However, Brooklyn would again be unable to get over the hump and pull ahead, as Baruch would answer with a three of their own from Edward Roscigno.

Trailing by five, 53-48, with just 2:50 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs finally made their run, scoring seven straight points to take their first lead of the night, 55-53, with 1:29 left on the clock. Kellman began the run scoring the first four points, while Gjonbalaj capped the run with a three that gave the visitors its first lead.

Kellman would later give Brooklyn its largest lead of the game, 57-54, hitting a pair of free throws with just 40 seconds left in the game, which would set up the exciting finish.
