Box ScoreFlushing, NY --- The #3 seeded Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team fell to the #2 seeded Hawks of Hunter College in the semifinals round of the 2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championships on Sunday afternoon at Queens College by a score of 6-0.
With the loss, Brooklyn ends its season with an even 7-7 overall record, while Hunter improves to 9-3 overall to advance to the championship final round on Thursday, May 1st at the USTA National Tennis Center against top seed Baruch College. Baruch defeated #4 College of Staten Island, 5-1, to advance to the final.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Hunter swept doubles play. The duo of Gonzalo Saez-Garcia and David Joseph took an 8-2 win at #1 doubles over
Elliot Haddad and
Charles Stevens, while the tandem of Carlos Saavedra and Daniel Rabinovich took home an 8-3 win at #3 doubles against
Deshi Wu and
Marvin Gill. The pairing of Matthew Balilo and Alex Shahban completed the doubles sweep earning a hard fought 8-5 at #2 doubles over
Stanley Purcell and
Robin Varughese.
Up 3-0, Hunter entered singles play needing just two more victories to clinch its seventh championship final appearance since 2005.
Saez-Garcia put the Hawks up 4-0 with a win at #1 singles over Haddad, 6-0, 6-0.
Needing just one more win, Hunter's Rabinovich and Joseph were neck-and-neck for the fifth win. In the end, Rabinovich finished first, defeating
Trevaughn Daley, 6-1, 6-0, at #6 singles to clinch the match for the Hawks.
Joseph was able to finish his match prior to the suspension of play; however, downing Purcell, 6-0, 6-1.
#2, #4 and #5 singles would all go unfinished. Balilo was up on Stevens, 5-4 in the first set at #2 singles; Saavedra was up on Varughese 6-1, 3-1 at #4 singles, while
Brandon Green was up on Shahban, 5-4, in the first set at #5 singles.
With 10 of 12 players expected to return next season, the Bulldogs will look to make another leap into the top echelon of the conference, as Brooklyn improved from 0-7 in conference play in 2013 to 5-2 in 2014. This season also saw BC host a quarterfinals round match for the first time since 2008 and advance to the semifinals round of the conference championships for the first time since 2007.
