Box ScoreBrooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team (1-1, 1-0 CUNYAC) pulled out a hard-fought 5-4 win on Thursday afternoon against the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice (0-2, 0-1 CUNYAC) in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action at the Roosevelt Courts.
The day began with doubles play, as the Bulldogs would take two out of the three flights. The tandem of
Elliot Haddad and
Charles Stevens defeated the duo of Luis Chirinos and Richard Mills, 8-2, at #1 doubles; while the pairing of
Marvin Gill and
Alan Esses downed the team of Jowel Ahmed and Ejaz Ahmed, 8-0, at #3 doubles.
John Jay would edge out the win at #2 doubles, as Gregory Gon and Kelvin Rodriguez got the better of
Jonathan Chevinsky and
Trevaughn Daley, 9-7.
Moving the singles play, BC would take wins at the #1, #5 and #6 flights to close out the match. Haddad earned his second win of the day defeating Chirinos, 7-5, 6-2, at the top flight, while Esses also earned his second victory of the day at #5 singles, defeating Jowel Ahmed, 6-0, 6-2.
Andrew Mendelsohn defeated Ejaz Ahmed, 6-0, 6-0, at #6 singles.
John Jay won the #2, #3 and #4 flights, as Mills defeated Stevens, 7-5, 7-5, at #2 singles, Gon defeated Chevinsky, 6-1, 6-0, at #3 singles and Rodriguez defeated Gill, 6-1, 6-1, at #4 singles. Gon and Rodriguez each won two matches on the day for the Bloodhounds.
"With this being our first conference match of the season, we knew how important it was for us to start off aggressively," said head coach
Ahmad Odetalla. "We did just that by winning two of three doubles and it carried over just enough to pull out the win in singles."
Brooklyn will be back in action this Sunday, March 22nd, as the Bulldogs will host the Panthers of Purchase College in a non-conference match. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start time at the Roosevelt Courts.
