CCNY Hands Bulldogs First CUNYAC Loss, 63-53

Box Score Brooklyn, NY---The first place Brooklyn College Bulldogs could never quite get on track Wednesday evening at West Quad, as CCNY played the more complete game and came away with the 63-53 win.  Brooklyn falls to 12-5, 8-1 CUNYAC, while the Beavers improve to 10-7, 5-3.

The loss is Brooklyn's first in league play, and snaps a five game win streak.

The Bulldogs failed to get on the board over the first 3:15 of the game, while the Beavers knocked down two threes over that span, taking a 6-0 advantage.

Brooklyn was able to even the game at 10 behind scoring contributions from five players, however, the Bulldogs could not sustain the run as three CCNY free throws sandwiched an Erika Richards' three, to pull the visitors back in front by six, 16-10.

The Bulldogs tied the score once again at 16, but right before the quarter, City's Alexis Akridge converted an and one to put City to a 19-16 lead at the end of one.

The second quarter mirrored the first, as Brooklyn was able to tie the game at 25, but a three point run to end the quarter gave the Beavers a 28-25 halftime lead.

In the third, Brooklyn finally broke through and took a three point lead, 36-33, on a Twanda Holder three-point play as she made a lay-in and was fouled.

The Beavers ended the quarter on a 7-1 run, however, taking a 40-37 lead into the fourth.

After an Olivia Colbert bucket with 7:07 remaining tied the contest at 43, unlikely CCNY hero Robin Daley knocked down three consecutive three-pointers for the Beavers, sparking 9-2 run that put City up by seven, 52-45, which proved to be an insurmountable deficit for the Bulldogs. Daley was only 5-20 from downtown entering the game, but picked the right moment to step up, helping her team to the road victory.

"We didn't bring the type of energy and hustle needed to win conference games in the second half of the season," said BC head coach Alex Lang.  "We gave up way to many second opportunities, and didn't get to a number of loose balls. Give City credit. They wanted it more tonight."

Tonight was only the third time this season the Bulldogs have been outrebound (Marymount, NYU), as the Beavers owned a 43-40 advantage on the glass.  Brooklyn is now 0-3 when not controlling the boards.

On a bright note for BC, Olivia Colbert posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards.  Karen Mak poured in 18 points off the Brooklyn College bench, while knocking down the Bulldogs' only two shots from beyond the arc.

Brooklyn will travel to John Jay on Friday to take on the Bloodhounds in another league contest.
