Brooklyn Outlasts Cougars for Third Consecutive Win

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Team (17-4, 9-1 CUNYAC) outlasted Medgar Evers College (0-21, 0-10 CUNYAC) 85-78 on Wednesday evening at Roosevelt Gymnasium.  Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Astoria, NY) and Daniel Nisbett (Michael J. Petrides / Staten Island, NY) combined to score 26 of Brooklyn's 46 second half points to propel the Bridges to thier third consecutive victory.

Brooklyn raced out to an early 6-0 lead as Ahmad Hemingway (Curtis / Brooklyn, NY) scored four quick points.  Another Hemingway lay-up pushed the lead to 10-3 barely three minutes into the game. The Cougars then started an 11-0 run, with Marcus Archer ( Brooklyn Comp. / Brooklyn, NY) netting seven points.  Hemingway then converted two more lay-ups to knot the score at 14-14.  A three-point play by Antwayne Francis (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) capped a 7-2 MEC rally that gave the Cougars a 21-16 edge.

A three-pointer by Marlon Thornton (Richmond Hill / Brooklyn, NY) capped an 11-0 BC rally and gave the Bridges a 27-21 lead midway through the opening stanza.  Brooklyn would push the lead to eight points with just over five minutes to play in the period,  Megar Evers then went on a 14-2 run to close the period, taking a 43-39 lead into the intermission.

The Cougars maintained the lead early into the second half until a Thomas Guerin (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) jumper brought the teams even at 48-48 four minutes into the period.  Another bucket by Guerin pushed the edge to five points. The game tetered back and forth for the 11 minutes.  There were nine ties and eight lead changes in the second half alone.

With the game tied at 72-72, Darnell Cudjoe (Murray Bergtraum / Brooklyn, NY) grabbed an offensive board and converted the ensuing putback to give Brooklyn the lead for good.  Nisbett and Jean-Baptiste combined to go 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in final 1:10 to seal the game.

Jean-Baptiste just missed a double-double, netting 22 points and grabbing nine boards.  Hemingway, who also collected nine caroms, scored 14 points. Thornton dropped 13 points in the victory. The Cougars were paced by Archer, who scored a game-high 31 points.

Brooklyn next plays at City Tech on Friday evening, facing the Yellow Jackets in a CUNYAC game.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
