Men's Basketball Uses Big 2nd Half To Knock Off Baruch, 78-73

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Team (13-5, 7-1 CUNYAC) used a 48-point second half to knock off Baruch (13-5, 5-2 CUNYAC) in a rematch of last year's conference final, 78-73.

Baruch seemed to have the advantage early, and when Brooklyn's Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY) picked up his second foul of the half at the 7:28 mark, Baruch pushed their lead to seven, 37-30, to end the half.

In the second half Brooklyn used some pressure to speed up the tempo of the game, helping them cut into Baruch's lead and then eventually take a lead own, 58-56, as Thomas Guerin (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) found Darnell Cudjoe (Murry Bergtraum / Brooklyn, NY) with a behind the shoulder pass for the wide open lay-up with 9:30 left to play.

Baruch had some chances to cut into the lead in the last couple of minutes of the game, however poor foul shooting and spotty defense did not help their effort. A Chris Beauchamp (Xavier / Glendale, NY) 3-point basket cut the lead to three, 76-73 with just 10 seconds remaining.  After a time out, Baruch was forced to foul Jean-Baptiste, who buried both free throws to clinch the victory.

Jean-Bapstiste led both teams in the scoring column with 23 points.  Guerin had a big afternoon as well, scoring 19 points, while dishing out four assists and not committing a single turnover.

Cudjoe, who had a big game when these two teams squared off in the title game last February, notched a double-double today with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Baruch had all five starters in double-figures in what was a balanced attack for the Bearcats.

Brooklyn will have a 5-day lay-off before hosting Berkeley College on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
