Women’s Tennis Completes Perfect CUNYAC Season; Heads Into Championships as #1 Seed

Bronx, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team defeated the Lightning of Lehman College in its final City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match of the season on Monday. With the win, the Bulldogs finish the regular season with an impressive 12-2 overall record and an unblemished 8-0 mark in CUNYAC play.

In a continuation of Friday's match, which was halted due to rain, the Bulldogs would take five of the six singles matches' on the day to secure the victory. Doubles play would not be able to be completed due to darkness.

Freshman Yuliya Orkis, the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, continued her strong play on the year, defeating Ravnit Bhatia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at number 1 singles. Another conference honoree this week, senior Janice Shen, the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, was also victorious, downing her opponent Daraliz Collado at number 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Sophomore Gianna Gelosi won her match at number five singles, 6-1, 6-0. Classmates Maria Sanz and Norma Lynn Chabbott took home wins at number 3 singles and number 6 singles, respectively, as both their opponents retired.

Brooklyn, the regular season champion, is now set to enter the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championships as the #1 overall seed.

The Bulldogs will take on a familiar foe, as Lehman, the #8 seed; will travel to the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus for the opening quarterfinals match on Wednesday, October 19th.

If Brooklyn advances, the semifinals will be held on Friday, October 21st at 4:00 pm at the USTA - National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. The championship match, which will also be held at the National Tennis Center, will take place on Saturday, October 22nd.
