Men’s Basketball Upset Bid Falls Short Against CSI, 73-66

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team fell short of pulling off an upset tonight at the West Quad Center, as the Bulldogs dropped their City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) finale to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island by a score of 73-66.

With the loss, BC concludes the regular season with a 7-4 CUNYAC record and drops to 16-8 overall on the year. Staten Island finishes the season with a perfect 11-0 conference record and improves to 20-4 overall on the season.

The Dolphins, ranked first in the Atlantic Region, have clinched the #1 overall seed for the upcoming CUNYAC/Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships, while the Bulldogs have assured themselves a top-four seed and the right to host a quarterfinals round game next Saturday, February 18th. Time and opponent will be announced at a later date.

Senior guard Amil John netted a team-high 20 points, to go along with six rebounds and three steals; while classmate and backcourt partner Tyshawn Russell finished the night with 19 points. Junior forward Kavon Baker chipped in with 11 points, while classmate Steven Grant came off the bench to provide eight points and five rebounds.

For CSI, Jordan Young led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, to go along with six rebounds and four assists, while Bloochy Magloire contributed with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. T.J. Tibbs chipped in with 10 points, five assists and four steals.

Following a layup from Baker which tied the game at 3-3 (18:46) early in the first half, the Dolphins used a 15-6 run keyed by three three-pointers from Magliore, to take an 18-9 lead. CSI would lead the rest of the half and eventually take a 35-29 advantage heading into the locker room. The visiting Dolphins shot 55.6% (15-27) from the field in the opening period, including going 4-for-11 (36.4%) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs shot 42.9% (9-21) in the first half, including 2-for-5 (40.0%) from three and 9-for-11 (81.8%) from the charity stripe.

CSI would continue to lead in the second half; however the Bulldogs would not go down without a fight. After a Javon Cox free throw gave the Dolphins a 44-37 lead with 13:28 remaining in the game, BC went on a 9-2 run to tie the game for just the second time on the night at 46 all at the 10:50 mark. Brooklyn would be unable to gain the lead, as Tibbs would answer quickly with a three to put CSI back on top, 49-46.

The Bulldogs would cut their deficit to one on a number of occasions, but would be unable to get over the hump as CSI had an answer for every BC run.

In the end, the Dolphins would go on to hang on to the 73-66 victory hitting clutch free throws down the stretch.

Brooklyn returns to the hardwood on Monday, February 13th, as the Bulldogs will play host to Yeshiva University in their regular season finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm at the West Quad Center. John, Russell, Jonathan Martinez, Keiran Halton, Wade Kornegay and Eric Rodd will all be honored prior to the start of the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
