Box Score Brooklyn, NY---The York College Cardinals came into tonight's match slightly ahead of Brooklyn in the CUNYAC Standings, and with a win over the Bulldogs earlier this season, and while BC was able to win the match's first and third sets, they would be edged by York in a deciding 5th set, 15-13.
With the loss, Brooklyn drops to 9-10 on the season and 5-4 in league play. York ups their overall record to 14-8 and 6-2 in the CUNYAC.
BC came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, and won a convincing 25-15 decision behind four kills from junior
David Dimitruk.
The second set would see a swing in momentum, as after the Bulldogs would jump out to a 19-15 lead, and seem as though they had control of the set and match, the Cardinals would strike back to tie the set at 21 on a kill from Avinash Thomas. Brooklyn's
Vaughn Ford would strike for a kill to give his squad back a one point advantage, however York would make another surge and eventually pull out the set, 27-25.
While the visitors were back in the match, BC would not fold in the third set, as the hosts would never trail, taking the period 25-20 behind another four-kill set from Dimitruk.
After having dominated most of the match, the Brooklyn fans were expecting the squad to pull of the upset, however York did not comply, as after BC would open a 14-9 lead, the Cardinals would come back once again, finishing the period on a 16-8 run to force a final and deciding set.
In that final stanza, it was York that opened hot, taking an early 8-3 lead. The Bulldogs would regroup after a time out and come back to within one point at 10-9 and then once more at 14-13, however that was the closest they would come, as the Cardinals' Edner Geffrard would put away the match's final point for the York victory.
"I'm really proud of the way our guys battled tonight," said Brooklyn Head Coach
Michael Salak. "They battled for five sets and played thier hearts out. It was very clear that the effort and commitment they have been demonstrating in practice is paying off. It hurst to lose a match like that, but at least we left it all out there on the court."
Dimitruk's 16 kills was a match-high, while
Mihail Osipov chipped in with 14 kills of his own.
York was led by Bryan Williams' 15 kills.
The Bulldogs will be back in action at the West Quad Center at 11 am on Saturday when they face St. Joseph's as the first match in a tri-match with Bard. Brooklyn will face Bard at 3 pm.
