Bulldogs Open Season With 91-68 Victory Over RIT

Senior Egzon Gjonbalaj leads the way with 20 points.

Box Score Cleveland, OH----The Brooklyn College men's basketball team won their season opener in convincing fashion this evening, 91-68, against the Rochester Institute of Technology in the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve U. BC will play the host school in the tourney championship game tomorrow night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Brooklyn struck first, scoring on the opening possession of the game. The Tigers would answer with a three-point field goal. However, after trading missed three-point jumpers, the Bulldogs would take the lead for good on a Dillon Williams three-point make with 18:44 left in the first half.

Williams' three-pointer sparked a 13-0 run that RIT didn't answer until the 14:36 mark in the first half. This would be followed by another Bulldog 5-0 run capped by a three-point play "the old fashion way" for senior lead guard Jamel Gist.

BC kept a comfortable double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the first half, leading by as many as 19 points with :58 before halftime.

RIT would come out of halftime with a little more urgency, getting a few stops that helped them pull within as few as 11 points of the Bulldogs in the first five and half minutes of the second half, but were never able to get over that double-digit hump.

A made three-point field goal by Chris McIllhatton gave the Bulldogs a 63-40 lead with 11:11 to go in the game, and BC would roll from there.
Brooklyn grabbed their largest lead of the game (30 points) with a little over four minutes to play.

Senior guard Egzon Gjonbalaj led all scorers with 20 points on 8-13 from the floor including 3-6 from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Nicholas Grasso provided a huge spark off of the bench shooting a perfect 6-6 from the floor for 13 points and earning the game's only double-double by grabbing 12 boards on the evening.

Brooklyn shot just over 52% for the game and a solid 40% from three-point range, while guarding the arc very well keeping the Tigers at 26.9%.
