Brooklyn, NY --- On Wednesday, September 5
th, Brooklyn College officially unveiled its brand new state-of-the-art athletic complex that includes a soccer/softball a-turf field, as well as a three-lane running track, with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Steven Schechter, Executive Director for Government and External Affairs served as the emcee for the event. Brooklyn College President Karen L. Gould was on hand to speak to the audience, along with Senator Martin Golden, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblymember's Rhoda Jacobs and Nick Perry and Councilmember Mathieu Eugene.
Schechter also recognized Brandon Leachock and Melissa Severe, representatives from Councilmember Jumaane Williams' office.
Bruce Filosa, Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics, and Ben Johnson, Department Chairperson Physical Education and Exercise Science, also spoke to crowd about the excitement that the new athletic complex will add to the school.
“This is a very exciting time for Brooklyn College Athletics,” said Filosa. “This athletic complex gives us a home base for our men's soccer and softball programs and also allows us to add our 13th varsity team with the formation of our women's soccer program that will start off this fall. The track also serves as a practice facility for our men's and women's cross country teams.”
Senior Norah Marley, a member of the BC Softball team, and junior Shani Abrahams, a member of the newly formed BC Women's Soccer team that will make its debut this fall, also addressed the audience.
The first athletic event that will christen the new complex will be the Women's Soccer matchup against conference rival Lehman College, which is set for Tuesday, September 11
th at 4:00 pm. The Men's Soccer team will make its home debut on Thursday, September 13
th under the lights at 7:00 pm against borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn); while the Softball team will have its first home game in the Spring.
